Nginx already enable with gzip.

How to optimize depend on your situations (server resources, websites, visitors).

Server for this forum using hiawatha-proxy (aka hiawatha+apache), php-fpm_event, enable php apc, install mod-pagespeed for apache, enable cache for software of this forum (aka SMF).

Remember, about combination not fastest but optimize for share-hosting.

if you install mod-pagespeed, also enable mod_deflate (gzip compression apache). So, you can choose apache (httpd) standalone or nginx/hiawatha-proxy.

Don't edit httpd.conf directly but create module conf inside /etc/httpd.d. Mod_deflate already exists but not enable (but if install mod-pagespeed. mod_deflate will be enabled automatically).
